BACKPACK BLESSINGS FOR SOUTHSIDE ELEMENTARY
Coordinator: Shanna Witcher
In partnership with the guidance counselor, we provide small "Backpack Blessings" of food for students who are likely not receiving proper (if any) nutrition over the weekend. Because the supplies are purchased in bulk, those supporting this ministry make monetary donations to SUMC, For: Backpack Blessings.
WAY OF THE CROSS
Coordinator: Carol Campbell
Way of the Cross is a soup kitchen located in downtown Gadsden which feeds 300-500 people a day as an expression of the love & welcome of Christ. At least once a year, we schedule volunteers to help serve lunch each day of the week (10:45am-1:00pm), as well as for their Friday night meal (4:30-6:30pm).
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL MISSION PROJECT
Coordinator: Children's Council
Every year during Vacation Bible School, the Children's Council teaches our children about the importance of helping others as a follower of Christ. Sometimes the kids are asked to bring in canned food, school supplies, toiletry items or spare change which are collected for a particular mission focus or project. However, to support our children's growth in serving, our church family collects along with the children to multiply their donations.
COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING MEAL
Coordinator: Mission Team
Every Thanksgiving week, we encourage volunteers to participate in this annual United Way event which provides around 4,000 Thanskgiving meals to the homebound, homeless, elderly, newcomers, displaced and longely across Etowah County. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, volunteers help prepare meals. Then on Thursday, volunteers visit with guests, deliver & serve meals, as well as help with preparation & clean-up.
For I was a stranger and you welcomed me...
YOUTH MISSION TRIP
Every summer, the youth of our church give one week of their summer vacation to help others in need. Our church family wants to instill in our young people the desire to help others like Christ, therefore we do all we can to support the mission opportunities.
For I was naked and you clothed me...
Every winter, we ask our church family to clean out their closets & drawers to provide others with coats & clothes to keep themselves warm and dress themselves respectfully. Also, following our biannual Yard Sales, all remaining clothes will be donated. Typically, all donations are given to the East Gadsden Clothes Closet.
DHR ANGEL TREE
Coordinator: Melissa Smith
Every December, we receive the names & wish lists of around 15 foster children from DHR. Church members take an angel from our Angel Tree and purchease the listed toy or article of clothing as a way of sharing Christ's love with these very special children, as well as helping support the foster families who are taking car of them.
For I was sick and you too care of me...
Coordinators: Virginia Witcher & Beverly Sibert
Our congregation has many people who have been an integral and beloved part of our church family for many years. Unfortunately, due to age or changing health, they are no longer able to be a physical presence in the church. To express our continued love and care for them, a team of church members ministers to them through monthly visits, weekly phone calls, and occasionally mailing them cards.
HEARTS & HANDS PRAYER BLANKETS
Coordinator: Ellen Phillips
Every Tuesday from 9-11am, a group of women gather at church to crochet blankets given to those in need of Christ's healing love. As the church becomes aware of needs, we pray over the blankets & those who will receive them during Sunday mornging worship, then the blankets are delivered. For those who don't crochet but would like to support this ministry, the yarn cost is about $20 per blanket. Donations for yarn can be made to SUMC, For: Prayer Blankets.
Coordinator: Wil Montgomery & Dwight Grizzard
At least once a year, our church sponsors a Blood Drive through LifeSouth and/or the American Red Cross. Whenever possible, we hold the drive in support of someone in or connected to our congregation. Volunteers are mostly needed to give blood. However, a few volunteers are also needed to help us set-up, clean-up, bake goodies for donors, and help with advertising.
